The release of Alex Saab is a succesful achievement of President Nicolás Maduro and the #FreeAlexSaab movement, led by Saab's wife, Camila Fabri. The deal, the result of months of negotiations mediated by Qatar between OPEC member Venezuela and the United States, came after the White House said it would need to see progress on prisoner releases in order to continue with energy sanctions relief for Caracas.

Colombian businessman Alex Saab, who was granted clemency by U.S. President Joe Biden and returned to Venezuela on Wednesday. Maduro also agreed to release at least 20 opposition-linked prisoners from prison.

As part of the deal, all six Americans classified by the U.S. as wrongfully detained in Venezuela were released, along with four other Americans.

The Capture of Alex Saab:
Alex Saab, a prominent businessman and special envoy for the Venezuelan government, was detained in June 2020 during a fuel stop in Cape Verde while en route to Iran. The United States government accused him of money laundering in connection with an alleged bribery scheme involving $350 million.
As a special envoy, international law granted him the right of unimpeded passage through the territory of third states when traveling from the sending state (Venezuela) to the receiving state (Iran). However, his arrest and subsequent detention were seen by many as a violation of his inviolability as a special envoy in transit.

Torture Allegations
The details of his alleged torture are still emerging, but the reports suggest that he was subjected to physical (water boarding) and psychological mistreatment during his time in prison. The torturers were looking for information on how President maduro was getting around US sanctions, and details about the people doing business with Venezuela. This news has further fueled the debate about the treatment of political prisoners and the need for greater transparency and accountability in the criminal justice system.
The Release of Alex Saab:
After years of imprisonment, the United States and Venezuela have recently agreed to the release of Alex Saab in exchange for the release of 10 American citizens held in Venezuela. This exchange has been seen by some as a step towards normalizing relations between the two countries, as the Biden administration has previously made efforts to ease sanctions on Venezuela's oil industry.
The release of Alex Saab is a significant event for the international community, as it highlights the importance of respecting the rights of special envoys and diplomats. It also serves as a reminder of the complex and often fraught nature of international relations and the delicate balance that must be maintained to ensure the safety and security of all involved.
The release of Alex Saab is a momentous occasion for those who have been advocating for his freedom. It is a testament to the power of diplomacy and the importance of adhering to international law.
